AI productivity is not the same as business value

We talk a lot about what AI can make faster.

But productivity is not the same as business value.

An AI system can make a task 50% faster, even if the overall process remains unchanged, because the bottleneck shifts elsewhere.

Even if the process becomes faster, there is another question:

Where does the business benefit come from?

More output may create more value if the market can absorb it.

Lower costs may create more value if the savings can be retained.

But neither is automatic.

And there is a further problem: how long can the benefit last?

If a competitor can acquire a better model six months later and achieve a similar cost reduction, some of the benefit may pass through to customers in the form of lower prices.

So, the AI business case should not start with:

What can we make more productive?

but with:

Where will the business benefit come from, and how will we capture and retain it with AI?

That changes the question from AI integration to integration of AI into the business.

And I think that distinction will matter more as AI becomes easier to adopt.
